GFL On-Call Operations Update

We want to inform you of a temporary operational change in Graduate & Family Living (GFL). Effective July 1, 2026, GFL will be pausing after-hours Senior Community Director (SCD) on-call operations. We anticipate returning to full operations in early August, and specific details will be shared later in July.

GFL is experiencing significant staffing constraints this summer and we are actively recruiting to return to full operations as soon as possible. We remain committed to supporting residents. Importantly, please know that resources remain available to support emergency or immediate safety concerns as well as lockout needs. Please review the information below for reminders about who to contact.

Community Reminders

We understand this may be a transition, and we’d like to remind all residents of some helpful community living practices and important policies:

  • Proactive Communication
    • If possible, get to know your neighbors before issues arise. This makes communication much easier later on. If you know you’re having a gathering in your apartment that may cause a noise disturbance, let your neighbors know in advance and determine the best way to communicate with each other about any concerns.
  • Noise Complaints
    • If you have a noise concern about a neighbor, you are encouraged to first try having a conversation with them directly. If the concern continues, talking to them in-the-moment (while the noise is happening) can be helpful. If you have tried talking to a neighbor and the issue persists, contact us at gfl@berkeley.edu.
  • Child Supervision (University Village)
    • Rental Agreement Holders are responsible for the supervision and actions of their children and/or the children of their guests. Parents and guardians are financially responsible for any harm or damage caused by their children to others and/or to property. Children are not permitted to play in parking lots, garbage dumpster enclosures, laundry rooms, the community garden, or in stairwells. In and around University-owned facilities, children under the age of five (5) years must have a responsible caregiver with them at all times; children aged 5-13 years must have appropriate supervision; and all children under the age of 16 years must have an adult caregiver with them overnight.

This pause is intended for the month of July, with an anticipated end date of early August. We are actively working to restore our full operations as staffing conditions allow and will communicate more details as they are available.

Thank you for your partnership in helping us maintain a positive community for all residents.
