UC Berkeley WarnMe Community Advisory: Safety Message For The Fall Semester

UC Berkeley WarnMe Community Advisory:

During this time of year, we typically see an increase in burglaries and thefts in our community. UCPD works closely with the City of Berkeley Police Department (BPD) to enhance public safety, mitigate risks to the community, and respond to concerns.

Please do not delay in calling law enforcement. UCPD strongly encourages the reporting of criminal or suspicious activity in a timely manner. With the community’s help, UCPD is able to respond quickly, investigate, and take appropriate action to reduce harm in our community.

We encourage you to keep these safety tips in mind:

Personal Safety Tips

  • Place electronics, cell phones, and other valuables out of sight while out and about.
  • Travel in a group if possible and stay in well-lit, well-traveled areas.
  • Utilize free security services such as night safety shuttles and Safewalk whenever possible.
  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Set passwords on your electronic devices to protect your information.
  • Consider using tracking software to aid in locating your devices.
  • Avoid resisting the demands of the thief or pursuing them.
  • Be cautious of online “Phishing” scams attempting to solicit personal identifying information or defraud you of money. Stay alert and protect yourself.

  • Always take your valuables with you, even if stepping away briefly.
  • If you cannot take your belongings, secure them with a sturdy lock or other reliable method.
  • Secure the windows/doors and either lock up or take valuables home with you when leaving your office/lab.
  • Lock the doors and close the windows when leaving your residence.
  • When leaving your car, take valuables with you or secure them out of sight or in the trunk, lock your doors/close your windows, and park in well-lit areas when possible.
  • Secure your e-scooters properly using durable locks.
  • Report any suspicious activity near scooters or bike racks immediately.
